Book Summary:

The only Freudian to have been originally trained in folklore and the first psychoanalytic anthropologist to carry out fieldwork, Gza Rcheim (1891-1953) contributed substantially to the worldwide study of cultures. Combining a global perspective with encyclopedic knowledge of ethnographic sources, this Hungarian analyst demonstrates the validity of Freudian theory in both Western and non-Western settings. These seventeen essays, written between 1922 and 1953, are among Rcheim's most significant published writings and are collected here for the first time to introduce a new generation of readers to his unique interpretations of myths, folktales, and legends. From Australian aboriginal mythology to Native American trickster tales, from the Grimm folktale canon to Hungarian folk belief, Rcheim explores a wide range of issues, such as the relationship of dreams to folklore and the primacy of infantile conditioning in the formation of adult fantasy. An introduction by folklorist Alan Dundes describes Rcheim's career, and each essay is prefaced by a brief consideration of its intellectual and bibliographical context.

Book Summary:

The SS Cygni probe sent back hours of video, captured by the Biolathe AI, but only a few minutes mattered--the four minutes that showed a creature made of fire, living , moving, dancing in the plasma fire of the double star's accretion disk. A dragon made of star stuff, so alien that only a human expedition to observe and perhaps capture it, could truly understand them. It's a perilous journey into the future, however, for SS Cygni is 245 light- years from Earth, and even though only two years' subjective time will pass on board the Karamojo, the crew will return to an Earth where five hundred years have passed. Captain Lena Fang doesn't care--she has made her life on her ship, where her best friend is the ship's AI. Samuel Fisher, the contract exobiologist, doesn't care, either. He is making the voyage of a lifetime and in the small world of the Karamojo he will have to live with the consequences of his obsessive quest for knowledge. The rest of the small crew--Axel Henderson, the biosystems engineer; Sylvia Devereaux, the beautiful physical sciences expert; and Phil Stearn, the ship's jack-of-all-trades--have their own reasons for saying good-bye to everyone they have ever known. As the Biolathe AI said, uncertain five hundred- year round trips don't attract the most stable personalities, but somehow they'll have to learn to get along with each other, if they're to catch their dragon and come home again. For at the end of the journey is the star dragon--a creature of fire with a nuclear furnace for heart. The crew of the Karamojo--human and AI alike--will risk everything to capture it, and it will take all their technology, all their skill, and more courage than they knew they had, to come home alive. Book Summary:

“In science fiction there is only a handful of books that stretch the mind—and this is one of them.”—Arthur C. Clarke In a moving story of sacrifice and triumph, human scientists establish a relationship with intelligent lifeforms—the cheela—living on Dragon’s Egg, a neutron star where one Earth hour is equivalent to hundreds of their years. The cheela culturally evolve from savagery to the discovery of science, and for a brief time, men are their diligent teachers. Praise for Dragon’s Egg “Bob Forward writes in the tradition of Hal Clement’s Mission of Gravity and carries it a giant step (how else?) forward.”—Isaac Asimov “Dragon’s Egg is superb. I couldn’t have written it; it required too much real physics.”—Larry Niven “This is one for the real science-fiction fan.”—Frank Herbert “Robert L. Forward tells a good story and asks a profound question. If we run into a race of creatures who live a hundred years while we live an hour, what can they say to us or we to them?”—Freeman J. Dyson “Forward has impeccable scientific credentials, and . . . big, original, speculative ideas.”—The Washington Post

Book Summary:

The Old Testament contains a number of interesting poetic references to God's conflict with a dragon, called by names such as Leviathan, Rahab or the twisting serpent, and with the sea. In this original contribution to the background and understanding of the Old Testament Dr Day undertakes a detailed and thorough examination of these allusions. Building on the discovery of the Ugaritic texts, he demonstrates a source for these references within Canaanite mythology. His study further explores the associations of the imagery. Sometimes in the Old Testament the dragon is associated with the creation of the world, or it becomes a symbol of a foreign nation, and in some references it is associated with divine conflict at the end of time.

Book Summary:

Just a few years ago, people spoke of the US as a hyperpower-a titan stalking the world stage with more relative power than any empire in history. Yet as early as 1993, newly-appointed CIA director James Woolsey pointed out that although Western powers had "slain a large dragon" by defeating the Soviet Union in the Cold War, they now faced a "bewildering variety of poisonous snakes." In The Dragons and the Snakes, the eminent soldier-scholar David Kilcullen asks how, and what, opponents of the West have learned during the last quarter-century of conflict. Applying a combination of evolutionary theory and detailed field observation, he explains what happened to the "snakes"-non-state threats including terrorists and guerrillas-and the "dragons"-state-based competitors such as Russia and China. He explores how enemies learn under conditions of conflict, and examines how Western dominance over a very particular, narrowly-defined form of warfare since the Cold War has created a fitness landscape that forces adversaries to adapt in ways that present serious new challenges to America and its allies. Within the world's contemporary conflict zones, Kilcullen argues, state and non-state threats have increasingly come to resemble each other, with states adopting non-state techniques and non-state actors now able to access levels of precision and lethal weapon systems once only available to governments. A counterintuitive look at this new, vastly more complex environment, The Dragons and the Snakes will not only reshape our understanding of the West's enemies' capabilities, but will also show how we can respond given the increasing limits on US power.

From one of the world’s most beloved Bible teachers comes a timely, compelling, and comprehensive biblical interpretation of Bible prophecy, the end times, and the apocalypse viewed through the lens of current world events. Many Christians struggle to understand the Book of Revelation. “The end times.” “The apocalypse.” “The day of judgment.” These terms are both fascinating and frightening – but what do they really mean? Drawing from decades of study, Dr. Jeremiah explains every key sign of the approaching apocalypse and what it means for you, including international, cultural, heavenly, tribulation, and end signs. With his engaging writing style and clear analysis of how current world events were foretold in the Bible, The Book of Signs is an encouraging guide to the Book of Revelation. In The Book of Signs, Dr. David Jeremiah offers answers to questions including: What does the Bible tell us about the future? How much can we understand about biblical prophecy and its application in our lives? What signs and signals will precede the end of everything as we know it? Which of those signs and signals have already come to pass, which are we experiencing now, and which are still to come? An epic and authoritative guide to biblical prophecy, The Book of Signs is a must-have resource for Christians seeking to navigate the uncertainties of the present and embrace God’s promises for the future with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

Book Summary:

Living in the present days of peace and tranquility it is difficult to picture the life of our ancestors in the days of King Alfred, when the whole country was for years overrun by hordes of pagan barbarians, who slaughtered, plundered, and destroyed at will. You may gain, perhaps, a fair conception of the state of things if you imagine that at the time of the great mutiny the English population of India approached that of the natives, and that the mutiny was everywhere triumphant. The wholesale massacres and outrages which would in such a case have been inflicted upon the conquered whites could be no worse than those suffered by the Saxons at the hands of the Danes. From this terrible state of subjection and suffering the Saxons were rescued by the prudence, the patience, the valour and wisdom of King Alfred. In all subsequent ages England has produced no single man who united in himself so many great qualities as did this first of great Englishmen. He was learned, wise, brave, prudent, and pious; devoted to his people, clement to his conquered enemies. He was as great in peace as in war; and yet few English boys know more than a faint outline of the events of Alfred's reignÑevents which have exercised an influence upon the whole future of the English people. School histories pass briefly over them; and the incident of the burned cake is that which is, of all the actions of a great and glorious reign, the most prominent in boys' minds. In this story I have tried to supply the deficiency. Fortunately in the Saxon Chronicles and in the life of King Alfred written by his friend and counsellor Asser, we have a trustworthy account of the events and battles which first laid Wessex prostrate beneath the foot of the Danes, and finally freed England for many years from the invaders. These histories I have faithfully followed. The account of the siege of Paris is taken from a very full and detailed history of that event by the Abbe D'Abbon, who was a witness of the scenes he described.

Book Summary:

The book of Revelation is one of the most controversial collections of written words. Everything about it sparks debate, from its author, to its veracity, to the interpretation of its very words. The subjects contained therein have become the rhetoric of would-be gods and the screenplays for multimillion-dollar action movies. The words Armageddon, Apocalypse and Antichrist are common to us all. The Dragon and the Lamb bridges the gap between Biblical accuracy and compelling storytelling. You will witness the chilling confusion of the Rapture, in which all Christians suddenly disappear in the blink of an eye. You will follow the schemes of the Antichrist as he attempts to take over the world. You will see a world battered by nuclear war, unprecedented natural disasters and incurable plagues. From the war of conscience within a young priest's mind to the final battle of Armageddon, you will travel a twisted road of depravity, fear and redemption. And in the end you will find yourself asking two questions: could this really happen, and if so, what would you do?

Book Summary:

Food for the Era of Love Series Food for the Era of Love is the name of a series that have within it books with their own separate titles, compiled and authored by Young-Rock Lee, an elder who is already published in Korean in South Korea. The Era of Love or in Korean, Sarang Shi Dae is the new era that has arrived and continues to move. (Sarang Shi Dae literally translates to "Love Era" or "Love Epoch," and this is the time of the Second Coming.) More than ever, we need the divine power of love, and the wisdom that comes from it. If we can open our eyes to this power from within ourselves, as God's children, we can be empowered in the hope and life of true change, as the joy of heaven newly opens in us when we receive the Word. The Era of Love is when the one who brings completion to the Gospel, and ultimately to Scripture as a whole, opens and arrives. The arrival isn't a physical one in the way most imagine, but initially, a powerful and very pivotal, spiritual one as the Word—that is, the Word opened in the Spirit. Food for the Era of Love is the Word opened in the Spirit pertinent to the Time that is now. The author's inspired purpose is to share with the world the Word opened in the Spirit that is not the literal Word of the End and new Beginning, but is, by receiving it, a profound shift. Experienced in this shift is the deeply personal and individual encounter with the perfect, agape love of God. God is Spirit (John 4:24) and we must eat the Word in the Spirit that’s right for the era. Revelation w/regards to the Second Coming or End Times and their depictions, especially John's prophetic visions, or the Garden of Eden and its elements, are not meant to be taken literally. They are allegorical expressions of the spiritual phenomenon in man during a time of God's greatest restoration and finishing-up of Scripture. The reason it’s important to let the Holy Spirit peel away the literal for us so that we can discover that end times-related scripture is figurative expressions, is that we can eat the spiritual kernel that is the very life force of God, the Word (John 1:1). It’s important also because we can be freed from fixed preconceived notions or dogmatic beliefs that can imprison and prevent us from God's powerful Spirit of Love, which, like the last wine of the Wedding of Cana, God reserved for the "wedding" of the "Last Day". At the time of the End, we are to look within and not outside for the answers of end times-related scripture; corpses don’t actually rise out of graves during the Second Coming. Numbers in Rev. 7 for example, 144,000 or 12,000, don’t denote that specific quantity as we know it. "The Last Day" doesn’t mean the world will literally come to an obliterating end. The end of the world isn't an end to the natural world, but the end to a certain “world” that's very much part of and inside the human. This part is the part that disturbs the peace, joy, thankfulness and love of God within man, and is the part that grew and grew since the time man ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, from which resulted ‘my’ righteousness (‘my’ good and evil that blocks) the Spirit of the Second Coming, who comes as the Word. That is why by God’s Love, the Holy Spirit fulfills completion from within man. This is the Era of Love, the era in which the completion of the Gospel and completion of the cross' love become fulfilled. He Seizes the Dragon and It is the Serpent of Old The interior world of the human is man's spirit, and it is a world we can't see with our eyes, but it's a spiritual world and the world of God. Ultimately, God's mission is to "seize the dragon" (Rev. 20:2, 1 John 3:8) which had interfered for too long, too often, and with resilience—"resilience" which was meant to exhaust itself with the eating of dust, all the days of its life (Gen. 3:17). This "dragon" is the part in humans that disturbs the peace, joy, thankfulness and love of God within man, and is the part that grew and grew since the time man ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, from which resulted ‘my’ righteousness (‘my’ good and evil that blocks) the Spirit of the Second Coming, who comes as the Word. This text reveals to us the symbolic elements in Revelation and Genesis as spiritual elements within us—and pertinent to us in our relationship with God during the time of the End and Beginning. This end and new beginning can result in either the immediate surrender of that which kept up the resilience (as previously mentioned) or, there can result great warfare before the inevitable captivity takes place.

This warfare is the wars in the Book of Revelation, but again, they aren’t wars literally, the kind we can see on the outside, but refer to the spiritual war of the End between God's Spirit and the spirit of Satan, that ancient serpent who was there from the beginning (John 8:44, Rev. 12:9). Unbeknownst to many, we humans are in the middle of this invisible world, thinking that other humans are the enemy, and not knowing the cause for why the human condition has worsened. The key component of victory is the Spirit of God's Love, which is Truth. It is to be victorious over oneself and from within with God, the Word, and bring Life to the dead (Rev. 3:1).

The Word opened in the Spirit—pertinent to the Times, allows us this victory at the time of the end. If we should receive such power, we are to put down our thoughts and frames, our egos and lust, and open our heart and spirit to let God seize 'me' for a rebirth and renewal that belongs to an unprecedented time.

This book reveals the "dragon" of the "Last Days," and brings forth spiritual discoveries that's inside of man in his relationship with God, who comes as the Word in the Second Coming. The Word is not the literal Word, but the supernatural power of God's Spirit as Love that was reserved for the time of the end.
